Xanax Addiction

Variety of Xanax Pills
|
Xanax addiction and abuse are growing with the escalating
sales of this addictive pharmaceutical. Xanax is one of the most commonly
misused prescription drugs on the market today. It is readily available
due to over prescribing by doctors. Xanax is a sedative similar to Valium.
It is used to treat anxiety, panic attacks, and sleep disorders. It has
become one of the top selling drugs in the United States. Around 30 million
prescriptions for the drug, Xanax, are written each year. This amount
of prescriptions has created over an $81 million dollar Xanax industry.
Still to this day, no drug is abused more than Xanax.
|
Since Xanax is so readily available, some abusers may never
have to pay for the drug. "It (Xanax) usually comes to you" says a 23-year-old
user. Xanax is used recreationally in "Polydrug" combinations, meaning it is
a component of a cocktail of drugs. Generally, young people abuse Xanax in one
of two ways. Some users combine it with alcohol or other depressants, while
others will use it to "come down" after a night of using uppers such as cocaine
or meth. While the misuse of Xanax to counter the effects of abusing other drugs
is dangerous business, it’s becoming more common among young people. More than
22,000 Xanax related emergency room visits were reported in the United States
in 2000, up from the 16,000 seven years before according to the Substance Abuse
and Mental Health Services Administration. Nearly 5 million people have at one
point taken Xanax or a similar anti-anxiety medication for non-medical reasons.
These statistics and the fact that users can become violent, or have marked
personality changes, is the reason that the UK has prohibited Xanax all together.
