Georgia student charged in drug bustTHOMASVILLE, Florida -- A Thomasville High School student accused of taking drugs to school was arrested there, then transported to jail as an adult.
According to Georgia law, the suspect, 17-year-old Deltrioz Grimsley, 402 Westover Ave., is an adult. He was released from the Thomas County Jail on a $3,500 bond.
Grimsley told agents the three dime bags of marijuana found on him were his, said Guy Winkelmann, commander of the Thomasville/Thomas County Narcotics/Vice Division.
The school resource officer learned from a teacher that Grimsley had the contraband, Winkelmann said. The teacher had confronted the student about the drug.
The bags of marijuana in the suspect's possession would have sold for $10 each. The drug in one bag would have made a small cigarette, the commander said.
Bobby Smith, THS principal, said he could not discuss student disciplinary action in the case.
The Thomasville City School System school board's policy on illegal drugs is for the student suspect to be suspended and go before a tribunal for an informal hearing. The tribunal is made up of school system administrators.
The panel's findings could range from finding Grimsley innocent to suspension for a school year.
Local Georgia schools experience much less drug activity than the national average, Winkelmann said.
He attributed the situation to a free flow of information and close contact among the school resource officers, teachers and students.
The narcotics/vice division responds to less than 10 incidents in a school year at city and Thomas County, Georgia schools combined.
