Georgia men charged with commercial gambling and drug-related offenses

A pair of Hartwell, Georgia men were arrested at their home Thursday night, after a Georgia sheriff's department raid turned up four video poker machines.
Hart County, Georgia sheriff's officials raided the 181 Sunrise Drive home of J.D. Estridge, 53, and Blake Estridge, 21, at about 6:30 p.m.
Police said they found four Pot 'O' Gold video poker machines that reportedly were giving cash payoffs.
The men were charged with commercial gambling and drug-related offenses.
Video poker machines have been illegal in Georgia since a law banning gambling devices took effect in July 2002. Those caught breaking the law face a fine up to $1,000.
The machines first sprouted up in Georgia when they were banned in South Carolina in 2000. Video poker opponents cited problems, such as crime and gambling addiction, as reasons the machines should be illegal.
The Georgia state legislature passed a law in 2001 that would have banned the machines.
But the legislation got bogged down in court when amusement companies filed appeals trying to strike it down.
The Georgia state Supreme Court ruled in favor of the ban in early 2002, and starting July 1 of that year, the machines were deemed illegal.
Thursday's arrests mark the second time this year Hart County, Georgia officials have seized video poker machines.
In May, officers seized 13 video poker machines and arrested a Hartwell, Georgia couple on gambling charges.
